Vedic Astrology Perspective on the Lunar Eclipse of January 20, 2019

David McConaghay

In the 2nd degree of Cancer, Rahu crosses the Moon at 2:37pm MST tomorrow.

Happy Saturday everyone!

-

Quick heads up that tomorrow afternoon (3:47pm MST) there will be a lunar eclipse at about 2* of sidereal Cancer.

-

The moments of precise eclipse alignment are an auspicious time for meditation and prayer. The Vedic sages generally recommend against being out and about during an eclipse; definitely don't look at it; and afterwards, don't eat any food that was prepared before the eclipse, just toss out the leftovers and start fresh.

-

All that being said, my understanding of Cymatics suggests that if groups of individuals are willing to cultivate a sincere sense of heartfelt love & devotion and, for example, bless the food, or dance their prayers, then that has the power to counteract and overpower any mythologically demonic energies.

-

An eclipse is an open portal, a predictably potent moment when the veil of space-time is particularly permeable. Human consciousness contributes significantly to that which gets sent out as well as whatever is to be allowed in. And so the sages implore you simply to be extra conscientious.

Lunar Eclipse in Sidereal Cancer: This is an image from the internet of a hermit crab that has outgrown its shell. Its embodied being has expanded beyond the limits of its existing box of belief and is ready to inhabit a more spacious paradigm.

Cancer is ruled by the Moon and is the area of the sky where we are concerned with unconditional love, where we grapple with both the power and vulnerability that comes with loving someone or something.

-

The Moon is the archetype of the Universal Mother and represents the heart-mind through which we receive & digest emotional information from life around us.

-

Think of the living mothers who have access to superhuman strength, endurance and pain-tolerance in order to protect their child(ren). But then pair that power with the utter helplessness she experiences when that child is out in the world without her, late coming home after curfew, or in danger beyond her control.

-

This eclipse represents the astrological resolution of events initiated by the Great American Eclipse of August 2017. In the past year and a half, we have seen this combination of power and vulnerability play out most obviously in the #metoo movement, where vulnerability has become a source of power but the exposure of that power nonetheless leaves people deeply vulnerable.

-

Indeed, another example is found in romantic relationships with a skewed balance of power. Power in a relationship can come from economic or social circumstances (as we've seen with #metoo), but they also arise from an imbalance in enthusiasm. When one partner is more "in love" than the other, the difference in their emotional investment generates a power imbalance that leads to the stereotypical stand-off between a (perhaps overly) devoted seeker of co-dependence and an aloof, coldly logical risk-averse strategizer.

-

The vulnerability that comes with unconditional love can turn to anger/rage when the object of that love betrays the implicit trust of the lover. The wisdom of Saturn provides support in the form of detachment and compartmentalization — the ability to zoom out, take things less personally and make a contingency plan.

-

The cautious, strictly rational practicality of Capricorn (ruled by Saturn) is the antidote to the Cancer tendency to deplete themselves via the incongruent emotional exchange encoded in dramatic indulgences such as martyrdom, which is often unfairly written off as simple neediness.

-

In return, sincerely caring Cancer contains the cure for Capricorn's cold-hearted, calculating shadow-nature. At their best, this polarized pair allows for intuitively empathic emotional information to filter through the heart-center on its way to the brain for formulation into a concrete plan of action, complete with accurate-to-scale blueprints and multiple contingency protocol, just in case.

-

For the past 18 months, Rahu's transit through Cancer will have activated the push & pull of this particular dynamic somewhere in your life. Can you name it for yourself? The area of life affected will vary, in a general way, depending on your Vedic rising sign. Do you know yours?

-

This pattern is set to shift starting in March 2019 (March 23, officially) when Rahu/Ketu move into Gemini/Sagittarius). More on this anon.

How do you relate to your innate sense of unconditional love?
Where does it find expression in your daily life?
Do you experience that love more as a source of power or vulnerability? Or both?
How might you beneficially apply detachment to that which you love most?
