2021 Numerology Notes

There is nothing astrologically significant about New Year’s Eve or Day, but it does represent the numerological new year — moving the world from a 4 to a 5 vibration.

2020 has been a master number 22/4 year, represented by the shape of a square. 22 is the number of the master builder and the master destroyer.

In the Lego movies, a master builder can see a pile of random parts and instantaneously conceive of a genius combination to create whatever is needed. 2020 is overflowing with examples of people doing just this.

At the same time, 2020 is the story of so many old creations crumbling, dissolving into an unrecognizable pile of constituent parts.

2021 is a 5 year (2 + 0 + 2 + 1 = 5), represented by the pentagon.

Numerology focuses primarily on the first 9 numbers, because after 9, we start back at 1 at its next level of evolution. The 5 is perfectly balanced in the center of this number line — with 4 numbers before and 4 after it.

This central position creates a dynamic, creative tension. Two equal and opposing forces exert pressure that is sure to transform whatever is in the center. And, if that perfect equilibrium slips even the slightest bit, the whole structure becomes unstable.

Ayurveda and many other nature-based ways of knowing identify 5 great elements that compose all of creation. Herein lies the paradox of stability and dynamism.

We live within a world of seemingly solid objects — standard human perception understands a tree to be a stable, dense, more-or-less reliably existing thing. This is the balanced power of the 5.

However, upon further inquiry, these seemingly solid objects are inherently unstable, ever-changing and essentially devoid of form. Here one can point towards the conceptual incomprehensibility of quantum physics and the linguistically incommunicable Buddhist idea of emptiness.

The 5 represents the dynamic tension of creation, simultaneously stable and ever shifting.

Consider a square, the shape of number 4 — the opposite of a side is a side, the opposite of a corner is a corner. This well-ordered quality makes the square one of the more stable shapes around, representing as it does, the Earth element.

Now consider the pentagon, the shape of the 5 — the opposite of a corner is a side; the opposite of a side is a corner. There are no neat parallels and right angles. All the angles are obtuse; all the lines eventually cross.

The pentagon is associated with the element of ether, the stuff of which space is composed, the background fabric of existence through which time moves. It is the substance from which all subsequent creation arises. It is the vacuum into which all created beings eventually dissolve.

Note that the pentagon is also a common symbol of military forces — for example, that enormous building in Washington D.C. and the celebrated 5-star generals whose stars each have 5 points.

5 is the number of swift changes, the way tension between tectonic plates builds unseen for centuries only to slip in an instant that changes everything on the surface.

2021 marks the midpoint of a cycle that started with 2017 and ends Jan 1, 2026.

Numerology moves in 9 year cycles, so it is worth contemplating what your life was like in previous 5 years — 2012, 2003, 1994, 1985, 1976, 1967 etc.
